In the late 1880's the Norwood Improvement Company, a concern formed largely by directors of the Canadian Pacific Railway acquired land in what is now known as the Norwood area, which they offered for sale in building lots. The area developed rapidly and the Company decided that transportation facilities needed improvement, as until then access was primarily by means of ferry.
In 1889 they commenced the construction of the first Norwood Bridge, which was completed in 1891 at a total cost of $89,000. From that time until it was sold to the City of St. Boniface in 1909 it operated as a toll bridge. Also in 1891, a new suburb called Norwood was built on 400 acres on land purchased by the Norwood Improvement Company, in affiliation with the newly formed Norwood Bridge Company and the Norwood Electric Tram Company. The area was settled primarily by English speaking people in an area that had previously been unilingual French.
The new homes built amongst the spacious oak trees had their own rain water tanks and drinking water was obtained from the town pump located at the corner of Marion and Taché. The Rat Portage Lumber Company drew many people to the area finding work manufacturing doors and windows. Norwood's first church service was conducted by the Rev. J.S. Woodsnorth (who later founded the C.C.F.) in a tent on Marion near Kenny. Several bodies of water surrounded the original Norwood area. At one time ducks were hunted in a marsh that is now LaVerendrye Park. These, and other bodies of water have long since been drained, and have given way to the fine homes and neighborhood now known as Norwood Grove.
