.: PROJECTS CURRENTLY UNDER DEVELOPMENT
1. Commissioned a new physical enhancement strategy to look at new
capital projects within BIZ area over next few years.
2. Reviewing options for renewal of various streetscaping elements.
3. Ongoing meetings with the various St. Boniface economic development organizations regarding partnerships and mutually beneficial programs. (Have representation on the board of Entreprise St-Boniface.)
4. Continue to lobby for appropriate development of the old Packers’ site.
5. Exploring the possibility of erecting a welcome sign on the Norwood Bridge.
The following outlines the focus of BIZ activities over the past few years:
.: PHYSICAL ENHANCEMENT
1. Completed the installation of a permanent community sign
board in Coronation Park.
2. Upgraded to LED bulbs and
floodlights for the Decorative Lights program along Marion and Taché.
3. Completed streetscaping on Goulet (between Taché and Kenny) and Taché
Avenue; had banners installed on Taché and St. Mary’s; and installed and
maintain 25 benches in the entire area.
4. Place 100 resin planters throughout the zone in the summer.
Installed and plant 6 trellis' at the Marion / Goulet triangle before the
bridge.
5. Have approved over 35 business storefront improvement grants to members through the (annual) Spruce up the Grove program.
6. Hire three to four summer students annually to help with neighbourhood greening and assist with the coordination and implementation of various
programs, including graffiti removal and neighbourhood greening.
7. Commissioned the painting of 8 murals on area buildings with plans to sponsor 1 – 2 more per year.
8. Completed streetscaping enhancements on Marion Street, east of des Meurons.
9. Installation of a six flowering trellis' at the entrance of the BIZ near the Norwood Bridge, in front of the monument.
10. Work with local community groups on the spring clean-up and planting of the Taché Avenue flower beds and the cedar planters through a community planting party.
11. Built a permanent bandshell structure in Coronation Park, including additional landscaping and renovation of the
cenotaph.
11. Launched the Light up the Grove matching grant program for exterior decorative lighting enhancements.
12. Completed streetscaping enhancements on Goulet Street, east of Taché (2003).
13. Completed review and update of Physical Enhancement Development Plan for the area and prioritized strategies.
.: MARKETING THE AREA
1. Host annual free concert series in Coronation Park Friday evenings through the summer.
2. Produced an Annual Festival in the Grove every summer with attendance of about 2000 residents and extended coverage in the Lance.
3. Have mascot Bizby represent the BIZ at various community events and parades.
4. Successfully lobbied to have parking extended to two hours on
various streets in order to meet the needs of customers of various businesses.
5. Publish an annual full-colour BIZ Directory/Magazine for distribution to local residents, promoting members and programs.
6. Have a permanent website, linked with other tourism and economic
development agencies.
7. Featured ongoing ads, in partnership with members, in the Lance.
8. Created the Shop the Grove promotional program to encourage shopping at local businesses. (2000)
9. Partners in the CARRAC (River Access Coalition) initiative, developing a water transportation program between city neighbourhoods and the construction of 7 permanent dock sites, including one in
Norwood.
10. Sponsored a summer golf tournament to encourage member networking while raising funds for BIZ programs.
11. Sponsor quarterly member networking luncheons with guest speakers.
12. Represented on Entreprises Riel Tourism Committee.
13. Produce quarterly newsletter for distribution to members, as well as periodic distribution to local residents.
14. Sponsor annual Festival du Voyageur River Trail program.
.: CRIME PREVENTION/SAFETY
1. Implemented a Teen Midnight Swim program at both Norwood and Happyland Pools on weekend evenings throughout the summer for the last five years
(ended 2001).
2. Offer ongoing information to members on CounterAction Seminars hosted by the Winnipeg Police Service.
3. Represented on the Healthy St. Boniface Network Steering Committee.
4. Worked
closely with District 5 police in the coordination and implementation of a neighbourhood foot patrol
program, fully sponsored by the BIZ. (Now looking at feasible options to replace
this program.)
